About me

I was born in the South-East of Sicily, in Modica, and grew up just 20 minutes away - in my dad's town, Ispica. I studied in Venice, then moved to the UK, where I lived for several years working as a university researcher in ethnic relations.  In 2004, I decided to return to Sicily and follow my passion for food, making my dream a reality: restoring my grandparents’ house and opening a cookery school.

From 2010 to 2015, I was the editor of Italy Magazine, you can find some of my articles here.

For twenty years, I have run cooking classes in my grandparents’ house in Modica, taking people through a journey into the history of Sicilian traditional recipes, using the wealth of quality ingredients the island has to offer in both traditional and contemporary Sicilian gastronomy. But, above all, sharing a family's passion that spans generations, and which I am trying to pass on to the fifth one, my children.

Most recently, I founded Zagara Blu, a creative project that brings together my academic background and lifelong passion for Mediterranean culture. Having studied Middle Eastern Civilizations in Venice and Ethnic Relations in the UK, I’ve spent years exploring how history, culture, food, and identity intertwine across Mare Nostrum, “Our Sea.” Through my studies, travels, and work, I’ve come to see the Mediterranean as a living mosaic of cultures…diverse yet deeply connected. With Zagara Blu, I want to celebrate this richness through design

Alongside these projects, I also founded Il Principio, an observatory on the state of journalism and a space dedicated to rethinking information from its roots. Through essays and reflections, I explore themes related to media, public discourse, and the evolving role of journalism in society, bringing my perspective as both a cultural scholar and storyteller.

The Food of Love Cookery School

The culinary experience I offered in my cooking school takes center stage in Nicky Pellegrino's novel  “The Food of Love Cookery School". After coming to one of my tours, Nicky decided to use that experience as inspiration for one of her bestselling books. Few months after she took the tour, I received an email from her saying that I had been ‘turned into Luca Amore’, the male protagonist of her latest novel, and asking if they could add some of my recipes as an appendix to the book. Since then, I have been welcoming many fans of ‘The Food of Love Cookery School’ to Modica and had the chance to meet Nicky in Modica several times to share our experience and recreate some of my recipes mentioned in the book with her fans.

Italy Magazine

As the editor of Italy Magazine, I drew on my first-hand knowledge of Italy to offer the magazine’s international readers an authentic taste of all things Italian — with food, naturalmente, always taking centre stage. During those years, I wrote extensively: from travel features exploring Italy’s lesser-known corners, to interviews with cultural figures, chefs and food producers, to in-depth pieces on traditions and art And of course, there were recipes — tested, curated, and written to bring a true slice of Italy into readers’ kitchens around the world.

Although my chapter as editor eventually came to an end, many of those articles and recipes remain available online, a small archive of stories that continue to celebrate the beauty, depth, and deliciousness of Italy. Some of them are still accessible here.

It was an honor for me to be interviewed by film-maker Mark Spano for his documentary "Sicily: Land of Love and Strife" . From ancient ruins to medieval architecture, the film unfolds the rich tapestry of Sicily's history, inviting viewers to traverse through time and witness the enduring legacy left by various civilizations.
