2nd of November: U Juornu re Muorti

2nd of November: U Juornu re Muorti

Today is "U juornu re muorti", the day when the church remembers with special celebrations those who are no longer alive, people visit the cemetery taking flowers and candles to the graves of dead relatives and friends, and, in Sicily, children find presents `brought' to them by the "muorti".

Now as I am no longer a child and could not expect any toys, I got myself something even better: sweet made by Benedictine nuns in Modica.

Easter Traditional Food in Sicily: Pastieri recipe

Easter is a very special time in Sicily, a wonderful blend of religious celebrations and traditions. And food, as usual in Sicily, plays a central role even during these festivities with: "nfigghiulati" (ricotta's pies), "cassateddi", marzipan decorated lambs, "palummeddi", "sciuscieddu", "'mpanati ri agneddu", and many, many more.
Here you find a recipe for one of my favourite Easter Sicilian delicacies "Pastieri", typical of the Modica and Ragusa area.

We went to have fun on the Etna slope while our friend Andrea went to Agrigento.

Madonna della Seggiola by Raffaello Sanzio projected on Saint Peter's Church.
I simply wanted to share with you the photo of these fantastic Christmas lights in Modica. If you are in the area do not miss it.
It is on every day until the 6th of January, from 6pm until 2am, and if you have the time to climb up the steps of Cartellone, the neighbourhood just opposite Saint Peter's Church, you will get a priviledged view of the decorated Church facade within the centre of Modica and its amazing baroque architecture.

Croccante di mandorle (almond nougat) is an excellent sweet that you find all over Sicily throughout the year, but during Christmas time it becomes an absolute must have dolce in every Sicilian household, part of the nougat (aranciata, kubaita, torrone bianco) selection served at the end of a meal together with dried fruit.

To make your own croccante you will need:
