Sicily produces roughly twice the annual volume of Australia in terms of wine. However, up until the late nineties Sicilian wines did not have the same reach as wines from the rest of Italy. One of the reasons is that for many years the bulk of the Sicilian wine has gone to bulk up bottles of more "marketable" red wine in Northern Italy, France and Germany. Now this practice is illegal.

In the past years Sicily has been enjoying the attentions of better vineyard managers, more savvy marketers (like Planeta and COS) that are dedicating their efforts to both developing local varieties as well as blending them with international varieties.
