Oh my... COS!

It's the 13th of April already and that means Wine Blogging Wednesday time. We are the host and naturally the topic is Sicilian wines, red wines to be precise. We already have at least a dozen entries which we will present tomorrow, but for now we focus on our wine.
It's a Nero d'Avola, which is perhaps the most well known grape from Sicily. Good thing then that it can also lead to some amazing wines, and Scyri from COS is undoubtedly an amazing Nero d'Avola. The Scyri wine is collected from 20-30 year old vines, kept in oak barrels from 16 months and in the bottle for at least another 6. The one we tried was of 2000, and we had it over a classic dish of lasagne, which fits nicely with the spicy, just a touch fruity full-bodied Scyri.
One of our favourites things about this wine is the wonderful balance between a full-bodied, spicy wine that is also fruity at the same time. Exploring the taste further, and some way through the bottle Katia and I started talking about taste of pomegranate, hints of clove and perhaps pink pepper corns. We also started talking about how this wine encapsulates the history of Sicily in a way, bringing together the spices and fruits introduced during Arab and Norman invasions and combining it with the local climate...All talk which may be taking it just a bit too far for a wine tasting. But I guess that's the think about this wine, it lifts the spirits up and opens the mind. As good wine should always do.

Ciao Ron! My WBW#8 submission: "Go big or go a casa!"

[...] Finally, we went for our good old favourites, COS and specifically a 2000 Nero d’Avola Scyri. In retrospect, and given the predominance of Nero d’Avola’s, perhaps we should have gone for something else like a Cerasuolo DOCG. Still, many chances in the future to do this! [...]
